About the Tax Policy Center > History and mission > Center staff  > Center partners

In response to a growing need for information on the impact of taxation on Travel & Tourism, the World Travel & Tourism Council, with sponsorship from the American Express Company, established the World Travel & Tourism Tax Policy Center at Michigan State University in October 1993.  The Center is based within the Travel, Tourism and Recreation Resource Center.

The Tax Policy Center’s primary goal is to track and monitor the status of taxes imposed on travelers and Travel & Tourism companies around the world.  In addition, the Center has developed a worldwide cost barometer, conducts applied economic research on the impact of taxes on the Travel & Tourism industry, and serves as a conduit for relevant and objective evaluation of Travel & Tourism tax policies.  At the core of the Center's mission is a fundamental belief that knowledge and education are vital to the process of making informed policy decisions.

Mission Statement

The World Travel & Tourism Tax Policy Center is dedicated to strengthening the Travel & Tourism industry, and the world’s economy, by providing timely information and analysis of tax policy issues and considerations to government policy makers, industry leaders and the general public. The Center’s educational services will promote equity, efficiency and simplicity in the fair generation of Travel & Tourism tax revenues designed to be an effective stimulus to industry growth.
