GALVESTON - Voters will decide Nov. 2 whether they want to increase the local hotel occupancy tax from 13 percent to 15 percent to help finance expansion of the city's convention center at Moody Gardens.

City Council voted unanimously Thursday to place the issue on the November ballot.

If voters approve the hotel-tax boost, the city plans to issue more than $10 million in revenue bonds for the project. The bond proceeds would be added to about $40 million the Moody Foundation plans to contribute to the convention center expansion.

The city already pays Moody Gardens the proceeds from a portion of the hotel tax to operate the convention center.
