Old computers were blamed by British Airways after it admitted that it had been charging airport passenger duty at airports where the levy had been abolished. The airline faces claims for thousands of pounds from passengers after Rod Eddington, chief executive, apologised for wrongly imposing the tax on routes from ten airports since April 1. BA said that the oversight was due to its outdated booking terminals still in use at some travel agents and smaller airports.

Gordon Brown, the Chancellor, abolished the
£10 tax last year for flights from the Highlands and Islands.
