Maryland Heights is enacting its hotel-room tax of one-fourth of 1 percent and has established a tourism tax fund as the repository for those tax receipts. Voters on Nov. 6 approved Proposition H, which authorized the tax on the 3,000 sleeping rooms. Under enabling legislation passed by the City Council, the tax will begin on Jan. 1 and is payable to Maryland Heights quarterly. The municipality can retain no more than 5 percent of collected revenue to offset the cost of collecting the tax.

The tax is expected to generate $100,000 annually. Maryland Heights plans to use the money to work with the Maryland Heights-West Port Chamber of Commerce to promote tourism within a 200-mile radius. The effort is part of a comprehensive five-year plan to become the region's top hospitality center.
